To speed decision-making, our minds rely on heuristics—mental shortcuts that help us act quickly but often at the cost of accuracy. These shortcuts can lead to cognitive biases, systematic patterns of deviation from rational judgment.

Consider anchoring bias: the tendency to rely too heavily on the first piece of information we receive. A car salesperson might first show you an expensive model so that the cheaper one seems like a bargain, even if it’s still overpriced. Or take confirmation bias, the tendency to seek and interpret information in ways that confirm what we already believe. In the age of personalized social media feeds, confirmation bias can create “echo chambers” where opposing views are rarely encountered.

Another common bias is the availability heuristic, in which we judge the probability of events based on how easily examples come to mind. For instance, after seeing news about plane crashes, people may overestimate the risk of flying, even though statistically it’s far safer than driving. These biases evolved for survival—quick decisions were once more valuable than perfect accuracy—but in modern society, they can lead to financial mistakes, relationship misunderstandings, and even public policy errors.

Awareness is the first step in overcoming bias. But awareness alone is not enough, because biases operate automatically and unconsciously. Effective strategies include actively seeking disconfirming evidence, delaying important decisions to allow for reflection, using checklists to reduce oversight, and consulting with people who hold different perspectives. In some cases, structured decision-making frameworks—like cost-benefit analyses or probabilistic forecasting—can counteract mental shortcuts.

Importantly, biases are not just flaws—they are byproducts of otherwise useful cognitive processes. The same heuristics that sometimes mislead us also allow us to make rapid judgments in complex, uncertain environments. The goal is not to eliminate biases entirely (an impossible task) but to understand their influence and design our thinking environments to minimize harmful effects.

The human brain processes vast amounts of information every second, but it cannot do so perfectly.
