The <em data-start=\"9333\" data-end=\"9351\">Stages of Change<\/em> model identifies six phases: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and sometimes relapse. People often cycle through these stages multiple times before achieving lasting transformation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9570\" data-end=\"9947\">Resistance to change can stem from <em data-start=\"9605\" data-end=\"9627\">cognitive dissonance<\/em>\u2014the mental discomfort caused by holding conflicting beliefs or behaviors. It also arises from the brain\u2019s preference for predictable patterns. Habit loops, consisting of a cue, routine, and reward, keep behaviors locked in place. Altering them requires disrupting the old cue-response link and establishing a new one.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9570\" data-end=\"9947\"><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9949\" data-end=\"10236\">Identity plays a powerful role. Change sticks when it becomes part of how we see ourselves, not just something we do temporarily. For example, someone who identifies as \u201ca healthy person\u201d is more likely to maintain exercise and nutrition habits than someone who is \u201ctrying to get fit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10238\" data-end=\"10546\">Tools for change include setting specific, measurable goals; tracking progress; creating accountability systems; and designing environments that reduce friction for desired behaviors. Social support is critical\u2014sharing goals with friends or joining a group with similar aspirations can increase commitment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10238\" data-end=\"10546\"><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10548\" data-end=\"10948\">It\u2019s important to remember that relapse is not failure but a normal part of the change process. Each attempt teaches valuable lessons about triggers and strategies. Sustainable change requires patience, self-compassion, and a willingness to adapt methods along the way.
